Western Kentucky Hunting

Hunting licenses and permits are affordable. The state wildlife management agencies have successful programs in place to maintain plentiful choices for the hunter. On public lands the whitetail deer herds have been well managed for numbers and quality for many years. The state agencies also support private land owners with management information to promote proper herd management.

A state funded Habitat Improvement Program works with private landowners across the state to provide space, cover, food, and water for wildlife across the state. Owners of twenty-five acres or more have access to state biologists for habitat management information. With the major population centers located in the central section of the state a large portion of available wildlife land exists in Western Kentucky. The West Kentucky population density remains low enough to allow good sized tracts of untilled land for wildlife habitat.

Western Kentucky is Top 4 in all of US

One interesting statistic about Kentucky whitetail hunting comes from http://www.boone-crockett.org/pdf/geographicwhiteail.pdf. This document from the Boone and Crockett organization reports Kentucky is number seven on the all-time top-ten list for Boone and Crockett deer. Western Kentucky ranks 4th in the country for top whitetail hotspots according to the QDMA’s 2009 Whitetail Report.  An article attributed to North American Whitetail Magazine (2006) places Kentucky number two for the period 2001-2006 for Boone and Crockett deer per square mile.

The Value

For the individual hunter or hunting group there are some really favorable conditions for purchasing or leasing hunting acreage. Although the land values have continued to appreciate for decades, the actual prices remain below Iowa and Illinois. The record of high quality whitetail and turkey hunting success cannot be overlooked. Over 90% of the land in the state is in private hands. Game resources on public land have been managed to provide excellent success rates without drawing for hunting permits or limiting access.
